                                     Should I Have a Gun?

1) advocate (L. 3):

2) odd (L.3):

词语辨析:

strange: hard to accept or understand; not known or experienced

odd: unusual (含有希奇古怪与众不同的意思)

peculiar: belonging only (to a particular person, place, time, etc.); unusual (esp. in a troubling or displeasing way)

3) It wasn’t ignorance of crime statistics that previously kept me from owning a gun nor thinking I was immune to violence (L.3-5): a cleft sentence (强调句) meaning “It wasn’t ignorance of crime statistics that previously kept me from owning a gun; it was not thinking I was immune to violence that kept me from owning a gun, either.” 以前我没有枪,并不是因为我对有关犯罪的统计资料不了解,也不是因为我自认为可以不受暴力的袭击。

Cleft sentence structure:  It is/was + emphatic part + that + ….

4) ignorance (L. 3):

常见搭配:

表现出无知 to display/exhibit one’s ignorance

暴露出无知to expose/reveal one’s ignorance

弥补自己的无知to mend one’s ignorance

全然无知complete/utter ignorance

     Someone who has little official education may show ____________________(对历史一无所知), but be very knowledgeable about practical matters. ignorance of history ( n. lack of information or knowledge)

5) affect (L. 10):

 trans-:转变,转换,转移

transaction n.

办理,处理,交易

transplant v. 移植

transfer n./v.  移动,转移,调转

transform v.使变形,改造

transmigrate v. 移居

词根-port-: 1)运送;(2)门

(1) portable a. 可携带的, porter n. 脚夫, 侍者, export v. 输出;  外销, import v. 输入, report v. 报告, support v. 支持;赡养, transport v. 运输

(2) porter n. 守门人,porch n. 门廊,opportunity n. 机会,passport n. 护照,airport n. 空港,seaport n.海港,deport v. 驱逐出境

7) be capable of (L.12):

8)intend (L.12):

常见搭配:

9) confront (L. 18): vt. face 面临,遭遇;make sb. face sth. unpleasant 使面对,使面临

When ______________________(面对挑战), some people choose to draw back, while others take them up bravely. confronted with challenges (v. make sb. face sth. unpleasant)

10) dominate (L. 30):

11)reveal (L.39):

A senior civil servant has been disciplined for ________________(向媒体透露政府秘密计划). revealing secret government plans to the media/press (v. disclose, make …known)

       研究报告显示,那种鸟已经濒临绝种。Research revealed that the bird was on the brink of extinction. (v. show)

12)The man mustn’t have seen my gun (L. 45): The man can’t have seen my gun.

注意:When we give a negative conclusion about a past event, we usually use “can’t have done”. The use of “mustn’t have done” to express a conclusion is American English.

13) bet (L. 66):

你在世界杯足球赛的获胜球队上下赌注了没有? Did you bet on the winner of the World Cup football game? (v. risk money on the result of a race, a game, a match, or a future event)

________________(我和他打赌100) that our team would win the game. I bet him 100 yuan

我确信如果你每天慢跑一小时,几个月后你肯定能5公斤I bet you’ll lose 5 kilos in a few months if you jog for an hour each day. (v. be very certain)
