The Structure of a Paragraph

A paragraph is a group of related sentences developing one central idea, or expressing one unit of thought. It is a unit in itself and is also part of the larger whole—the essay.

A paragraph should be unified(统一的), coherent (连贯的)and well developed. It is unified when it has a single focus. It is coherent when all the sentences in it are related and lead logically to one another, and the choice is based on the content of the paragraph and the intention of the writer.

Topic1Succeeding in language learning

I am proud to say that I succeeded in learning a foreign language. It was a real challenge and, needless to say, it took a lot of practice. I carried a small dictionary with me everywhere I went as well as a notebook in which I listed new words I came across. I also managed my time carefully so that I met the standards of the course and finished assignments on time. After years of persistence, I reaped the benefits of all my hard work. (85 words)

Topic 2: Why Do You Like Chatting Online?

I like chatting online for different reasons. First, it helps me avoid nervousness and embarrassment I used to feel in regular talks. Unlike the face-to-face conversation, it offers me much freedom in time to think out my ideas and prepare them well before posting them on the screen. Second, it adds no little to the improvement of my English. Through online chatting, I have more chances to speak with native speakers, thus bathing myself in the sea of genuine English. Finally and most important, it gives me insights into other cultures and keeps my mind open to better ways of seeing things. Now I tend to see things from a more objective perspective. In short, there is not anything in my free time that is more beneficial than chatting online. (130 words)
